Season in Review - Spring/Summer 2018

Hi Everyone!

Today I bring you my seasonal review! I started this blog mid-way through Spring/Summer and so not all my makes have been written up and so I thought it would be interesting to have them all in one place and see what they look like all together. I have recently been working through the Seamwork Build My Wardrobe tasks and designing my own look book for Autumn/Winter so I am concerned with creating an overall cohesive look to carry through for the whole season. Looking at my makes from this past season I can see some key themes coming through. This is most likely down to that fact that I am highly inspired by the highstreet and what is currently on trend.

Key themes this season:

  • Frills
  • Dresses
  • Button closures
My makes this season do not have very much cohesion which is the result of not planning my makes ahead of time and making whatever took my fancy in the moment. Now that I am working through the Seamwork Build My Wardrobe tasks I think my wardrobe next season will have much more cohesion.

I am really proud of my fabric choices this past season especially since this is something I usually tend to struggle with. What helped with this was the fabric series which The Stitch Sisters recorded and also this book I bought from Amazon which is like an encyclopedia of fabric which gives great details on care instructions, how to sew with each type of fabric and best needles to use etc.

I am also more confident in my pattern hacks and being able to see a garment as my own like with my Martha Dress and the Mirambell Skirt.

Another thing I have really worked on this season is my seam finishes. I have finally gotten to grips with my overlocker and so all of my garments have fully finished seams. When I pull out things I made last year which do not have finished seams then something just feels wrong about them so I'm really glad I can confidentially do this now.

My ability to pattern match has also come along way since last year and although it is very time consuming it's definitely worth it for the satisfaction at the end.

What did I wear most?

I definitely wore my Bloomsbury Blouse the most the season. The fit was perfect, the fabric was light and airy - great for the heatwave we had this year and it just felt so chic! It's very versatile, since it's white, and can be layered together with many other garments.

What did I wear least?
My African wax print dress from the latest Great British Sewing Bee book . I had a lot of issues with the fabric on this dress as well as the fit of the pattern. I washed the fabric with fabric softener which removed the lovely wax coating it had making the fabric very soft and delicate, which was then harder to work with. Also, the fabric has zero stretch and this is a very fitted dress making the dress very tight across the shoulders. This coupled with the delicate fabric puts a lot of strain on the seams and I can already see, from wearing it once, that the fibres in the fabric are pulling apart at the seams.

Next time I should make this dress in a fabric which has some stretch and also never wash African wax print with fabric softener!

What would I do differently?

I am still struggling to achieve a perfect fit on my me mades. I think next season I need to strive to take my time a bit more, rather than rushing to the finishing line and allow more time for the fitting process. The garments I wore most were definitely the most comfortable to wear.

Conclusion

This coming Autumn/Winter I have already started to plan out my makes and gather supplies so I'm really excited to see how they all pan out, (see my Pinterest mood board here) . I think this planning process will really help me to create a more versatile, mix & match wardrobe. From this last season I have learnt that I need to make sure I allow more time for fitting, even before I cut into my fabric and pay close attention to the washing instructions during pre-washing.

Stay tuned for my Autumn makes coming soon!
